Process and Collaboration: Shaye Remba & Polly Apfelbaum

Since its founding in Mexico City in 1969, through to its relocation to Los Angeles in 1983, Mixograf铆a has remained committed to innovation and experimentation through collaboration, always searching for new techniques to expand the possibilities of printmaking for artists of all disciplines. The Remba family has been involved in the world of printmaking for three generations.

Polly Apfelbaum graduated from the Tyler School of Art, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. She has exhibited consistently since her first solo show 1986. Her work has recently been recognized with a Pew Center for Arts Grant, a Creative Capital Award, and the 2012 Rome Prize at the American Academy. She has also received a Joan Mitchell Grant, The Diebenkorn Fellowship, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, an Anonymous Was a Woman Grant, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Artist Lecture: Vadis Turner

The ZMA is pleased to present a newly commissioned artwork by artist Vadis Turner. Turner has had solo exhibitions at the Frist Art Museum, the Huntsville Museum of Art, and the Abroms-Engel Institute for Visual Arts at the 福利在线麻豆 of Alabama in Birmingham. In 2016, she
was awarded the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. Her work is included in numerous permanent collections such as the Brooklyn Museum, 21C Museum, and the Tennessee State Museum among others. She teaches at Vanderbilt 福利在线麻豆 and is represented by Geary in Millerton, New York.

Eastern Hand Papermaking Workshop with Kyle Holland

Saturday, March 28, 11:00am - 4:00pm at the ZMA

In this one-day workshop, participants will learn how to form sheets of washi, or Japanese paper, using the nagashizuki sheet formation technique. Holland will instruct how to prepare fiber, form sheets using a sugeta, press and dry sheets to make high quality sheets of washi paper. Participants can expect to leave with a set of their own washi featuring the texture, luster, strength, and beauty that distinguish it from other types of paper. Holland is a book artist, papermaker, and printmaker and faculty and studio manager for the MFA Book Arts Program at 福利在线麻豆 of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Attendees will leave with their own handmade sheets, showcasing the texture, luster, strength and beauty that set washi apart from other papers. Windgate Artist-in-Residence Lecture: LaKela Brown

Thursday, April 9, 5:00pm at the ZMA

Utilizing imagery referencing 1990s hip-hop culture, LaKela Brown creates sculptural reliefs that evoke ancient art forms such as hieroglyphic wall carvings or cuneiform relief tablets. Plaster relief slabs are installed alongside their bas-relief counterparts, and in some instances, three-dimensional cast sculptures are placed alongside their molds. These works are presented as artifacts from another era that have been discovered and put on display for examination that is as much anthropological as it is aesthetic. Paying homage to ancient Greco-Roman methods of mark-making, Brown beckons viewers to consider how objects are historicized, represented, and abstracted in a museological context.

Paper Weaving Workshop with Helen Hiebert

Saturday, April 25, 10:00am - 3:00pm via Zoom

Helen Hiebert is a Colorado artist who constructs installations, sculptures, artists鈥� books and works in paper using handmade paper as her primary medium. She teaches, lectures and exhibits her work internationally and online, and is the author of several how-to books about papermaking and papercrafts. In this workshop, participants will explore several paper weaving techniques, creating a lantern and a notebook. Additionally, participants will also craft a unique hinge and stitch a simple binding. The workshop will provide skills to continue weaving and creating more books and lanterns using a variety of papers.
